ⓘ Schuler Books & Music

Schuler Books & Music, formerly known as simply Schuler Books, is a small Michigan chain of bookstores. Along with books, DVDs, and music CDs, the stores sell food and beverages at in-store cafes.

1. History

The first store was founded in 1982 by Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld in Grand Rapids, Michigan, due to their love of books. The original store was located at 2975 28th Street SE, and predominantly sold new books and newspapers. It did not have a cafe though served espresso drinks via a kiosk cart. A much larger store opened in 1995 a few blocks west of the original location. The current flagship store at 2660 28th Street SE introduced The Chapbook Cafe and expanded offerings with music among other items.

Schuler Books provides access to print on demand books via the Espresso Book Machine.

2. Locations

In addition to the flagship store in Grand Rapids, Schuler has a store in Meridian Mall in Okemos. In addition the company operates Nicolas Books in Ann Arbor, which it acquired in 2014 but did not rename.

Three additional locations have been closed. One was opened in downtown Grand Rapids in 2007 and closed in 2013. A store in Walker opened in 2003 and closed in 2014. In February 2018 Schuler closed its store at the Eastwood Towne Center in Lansing Charter Township, donating 6.000 books to the Friends of the East Lansing Public Library.
