A world map is a map of most or all of the surface of Earth. World maps form a distinctive category of maps due to the problem of projection. Maps by necessity distort the presentation of the earths surface. These distortions reach extremes in a world map. The many ways of projecting the earth reflect diverse technical and aesthetic goals for world maps. World maps are also distinct for the global knowledge required to construct them. The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans is a publicly available bathymetric chart of the worlds oceans. The project was conceived with the aim of preparing a global series of charts showing the general shape of the seafloor. Over the years it has become a reference map of the bathymetry of the world’s oceans for scientists and others.

The Genoese map is a 1457 world map. The map relied extensively on the account of the traveler to Asia Niccolo da Conti, rather than the usual source of Marco Polo. The World Map at Lake Klejtrup is a miniature world map built of stones and grass in Klejtrup So near the village of Klejtrup, Viborg Municipality, Denmark. In 1943, Soren Poulsen, a local farmer, was working on the drainage of the surrounding meadows when he found a stone shaped like the Jutland peninsula. This inspired him to create a small world of his own. During the winter months, with the use of primitive tools, he placed big stones carefully on the ice. The Kunyu Quantu, or Full Map of the World, was a map of the world developed by Jesuit father Ferdinand Verbiest during his mission in China in 1674. A copy is in the Hunterian Museum. The map follows the earlier works of Matteo Ricci, such as the Kunyu Wanguo Quantu.
